In both 2000 and 2004, I was a staff member with the Democratic National Convention Committee. I, along with our tireless teammates, configured hundreds of computers and maintained the network for thousands of delegates, staff, and elected officials. As you can probably determine, there was not a whole lot of time to take in the events going on "outside the wire" to say the least. For the most part, our day started with chugging a venti mocha before hitting "mag city" (no outside liquids were allowed past the magnometers) and ended with planing for the next day and resolving any problems that arose during the day. And yes, we were able to hit the occasional party or two.
This time out, I'm in Denver. Not as staff, or as a delegate (although that would be awesome - maybe 2012), but as John Q. Public. In my seven hours in Downtown Denver, I was able to ID about five politicians, noticed about 10 who "looked familiar" and picked up about three t-shirts. I was also able to watch Hilliary Clinton's speech at the location of MSNBC, directly in front of Union Station in Downtown Denver.
I'll admit, after the long drive yesterday (I never thought I would make it into town....but as HRC said tonight, "If you think you are going to quit, keep going.") Today was long as well, but well worth it.
Tommorrow, I plan on attending the CA Delegation Breakfast and blogging about it here as well as for other Orange County Blogs (such as OC Metroblog). And as much as I would like to stay in town for Obama's speech on Thursday, the long drive back to Cali means I'll have to press on.
